Say Goodbye to Rug Moths – Professional De-mothing Solutions

Moths Can Ruin Your Rugs.

We Can Help.

Cloth moths or rug moths are one of the smartest ancient insects that have been around since animals with fur have been around. While it is impossible to prevent moths from entering a home, there are ways to prevent the damage.

In Order to Understand Moths, We Need to Know What They Are.

Clothes Moths Have 4 Stages of Life: Adult, Egg, Larva, and Pupa.

Adult:

Before mating, a female moth will start looking for place to lay her eggs as they will look for quiet, away from disturbances; dark, moist, and abandoned sources of food, which will be fiber with lanolin-like wool, fur, leather, and sometimes silk.

After mating and after female picked the right environment she lays usually between 50 and 100 eggs at the time, clustered together and hidden well into the depth of pile of the rug or on the back. At this stage male dies after mating and the female dies after lay eggs.

Eggs:

Depends on environment (temperature, moisture….) Eggs will hatch in about 25 days, sometimes longer.

Larvae:

Newly hatched eggs will look like a ¼” long worm with a cream-colored body and a brownish-black head. The purpose of these eggs is eating and accumulating enough nutrition, like wool, feathers, or fur that is preferably contaminated with organic materials like food, body fat, or sweat.

Meanwhile they will spin a silky camouflage casing around them to go to next stage of their cycle. The case is attached to the body of the worm, and they will carry it around and hide inside when they feel in danger. This is the most devastating stage of their life as far as eating fiber.

Pupa:

The transition of worm to fly will happen in this stage and will take 10–30 days depending on the environment at this stage. The casing is sealed in a way that nothing will penetrate it, so spraying will not affect them. Eventfully new flying moth will emerge and cycle starts again.

Important: Removal of old casing is essential to prevent free housing for new generation.

De-Mothing:

Here at Cyrus Rugs, we would like to prevent and treat the moths as naturally as we can and try not to use chemicals. Here are some ways to do it:

Prevention

A) Vacuum your rug once a week or once every other week for the exposed part of the rugs , and once a month under the bed , sofa , dark, heavy furniture, and hard-to-reach areas.

B) Once a year, place your rug upside down under the sun for a few hours. Moths will die of dehydration.

C ) Have the rugs professionally cleaned every 2 to 3 years if you don’t have pets or every 2 years if you have pets.

D) If you have rugs that are not being used, try not to roll them and store them in the closet or under the bed; this will create a desirable environment for the moths. Lay them out instead or have Cyrus Rugs store them for you.

Moth treatment

There are two steps in this category. 1) Detecting moths and 2) treating moths.

Detecting moths:

1-Seeing a flying moth in the house.

2- One should look under the edge of the rug once every few months.

If moths are present, the first things you will notice are small, round, black

egg-like material that is the waste from moths.

3- If you notice chunks of wool is missing on surface of your rug or if you see silky cocoons (spiderweb-like) appearing on corners of your walls, under window sills, ceiling, under couches or any hidden area , these are indications of moths are active in your house.

Treating moths:

If any activities are noticed in your house or you have any concern, call Cyrus Rugs immediately. We will come to your house, seal and remove your rugs to our facilities.

We guide you on how and where to vacuum the remaining moths. At our facilities, we will go through every inch of the rug, top to bottom, back and front, to physically remove the casing this prevents the free house for the next generations.
